tip top tutorial : the Little Lady Puff stitch

please note that i am a self-taught crocheter

i look at patterns, panic, do it 500 times

and change it until it works for me.

there are a lot of puff stitch patterns out there

but this is what i do.

i apologize it has taken so long to actually post.

let us begin with the supplies

and dont forget patience.

when i try new patterns,

i always need patience.

SC=single crochet

DC=double crochet

step 1 - creating your foundation circle

chain 4

slip stitch into your first chain to form a circle.

inside the circle, make 8 SC 

slip stitch into your first SC.

you will have this :

step 2 - starting your first puff stitch

chain 3 (this counts as your first DC)

in the same hole that you slip stitched into in step 1, make 4 DC

you will have 5 "rungs", as i call them

step 3 - finishing your first puff stitch

this is where it gets a little tricky, heee

take your hook out (as pictured below)

put it through the top stitch of your first DC (i.e., your chain 3)

THEN put it back through your original working hole.

i pinch all the DC together so its easier to hold (see below).

now yarn over and pull through BOTH strands of yarn on your hook

it will turn you 5 rungs into your first puff.

step 3 - the in-between

in between each of your puff stitches you will want 3 chains.

so chain 3

. . . whew that was tough . . .

step 4 - creating your second puff stitch

in your next SC of your foundation circle, make 5 DC

now, take out your hook

and put it through the third stitch of your chain 3

yarn over and pull through BOTH stitches on your hook.

chain 3

and you are done with your second puff stitch

** repeat step 4 in the remaining 6 SC on your foundation circle.

step 5 - close off first round

once you've made a puff in each of the 8 SC of your foundation circle

slip stitch into the chain-3-hole between your first and second puff.

 if you just want one round of puffs, you can tie off here.

i did this for Sue

but if you want two rounds, proceed to step 6.

here's what the back looks like so far :

step 6 - creating round two

create 2 puff stitches in each chain-3-hole.

you will make a total of 16 puff stitches by the time you go all the way around.

slip stitch into the chain-3-hole of your first and second puff stitches

tie off.

tada, you've made a puff flower worthy of a Little Lady blanket.

woooooooo weeeeeeee.

in no time at all you will piles 

of puff flowers and puff granny squares

ready to be turned into blankets or pillows or anything.

sniffle.

INNER RING

1.  Create your magic ring

[chain 5  +  slip stitch into your starting hole] This forms a small circle.

2.  [chain 2**  +  1DC  +  chain 1]

3.  In the center of your magic ring complete 5

[2DC  +  chain 1].

4.  [slip stitch to the left of **] If you are starting a new color of yarn, tie off here.

POPQUIZ: You should have 6 rungs of [2DC] with a [chain 1] between each rung.

PETAL PART I (begin new color)

1.  If you are starting a new color, start yarn in the opening made from a [chain 1] of your inner ring.

2.  Complete [chain 2  +  1DC  +  chain 2  +  2DC]**

3.  In the other 5 openings complete

[2DC  +  chain 2  +  2DC].

4.  [slip stitch to the left of  **]

PETAL PART II (same color as petal part I)

1.  In each of the 6 [chain 2] holes complete [8DC].

[slip stitch between the first 2DC to close and tie off]

POPQUIZ : You should have 6 petals.

OUTER RING PART I (begin new color)

1.  Start yarn in between the first and second DC of any petal.

2.  Complete [1SC] in between each of the [8DC] of the petal. You will have made [7SC].

3.  Between the petal you are working on and the next petal complete [1DC] in the gap between the [2DC  +  chain 1  +  2DC] from petal part I.

4.  Repeat Step 2 and Step 3 until you reach the start. If you are switching colors, slip stitch and tie off.

POPQUIZ: Your stitching pattern should go [7SC, 1DC, 7SC, 1 DC…].

OUTER RING PART II (continue or begin new color)

1.  If you are starting a new color, start yarn in between a first and second SC of any petal. If you are continuing the same color, slip stitch in between the first and second SC of your next petal.

2.  [chain 2] This is your first DC. Complete [1DC] in between the next two [SC] from outer ring part I.

3.  [chain 2] then DC in between the next eight [SC] from outer ring part I.

4.  Repeat Step 3 until you reach the beginning. Slip stitch and tie off.

POPQUIZ: You should have a hexagon shape with 8 rungs (made up of each [DC]) between each gap (made from each [chain 2]).

INNER RING

1.  Create your magic ring

[chain 4  +  slip stitch into your starting hole] This forms a small circle.

2.  [chain 2]**  This if your first DC.

3.  In the center of your magic ring complete [11DC].

4.  [slip stitch to the left of **] If you are starting a new color of yarn, tie off here.

POPQUIZ: You should have a circle with 12 rungs.

RING LEVEL I (begin new color)

1.  If you are starting a new color, start yarn in between any rung of DC.

2.  [chain 2**  +  1DC ]  This is your first set of [2DC].

3.  [chain 2]

4.  In between each DC of your inner ring complete

[2DC  +  chain 1].

5.  [slip stitch to the left of **] If you are switching colors of yarn, tie off here.

POPQUIZ: You should have a circle with 12 rungs of [2DC] with a [chain 1] in between each.

RING LEVEL II (begin new color)

1.  If you are starting a new color, start yarn in a hole created by a [chain 1] of ring level I, in between any set of [2DC].

2.  [chain 2  +  1DC]**  This is your first set of 2DC.

3.  [chain 1]

4.  In each hole created from the [chain 1] of ring level I, complete [2DC  +  chain 1].

5.  [slip stitch to the left of **] If you are starting a new color yarn, tie off here.

POPQUIZ: Your circle should have 12 rungs of [2DC] with a [chain 1] in between each.

OUTER RING (being new color)

1.  If you are starting a new color, start new yarn in the hold created by a [chain 1] of ring level II, in between any set of [2DC].

2.  [chain 2  +  2DC]**  This is your first side-set of [3DC].

3.  In the next hole created by a [chain 1] of ring level I, complete your second side-set of [3DC].

4. In the next hole complete your first corner-set of [3DC  +  chain 2  +  3DC]

5.  In each of the holes created by [chain 1], alternate between 2 side-sets and 1 corner-set until you reach the beginning.

6.  At the start [slip stitch to the left of **] and tie off.

POPQUIZ: You should have a square with a total of 4 corner-sets (of 3DC  +  chain 2  +  3DC) and 8 side-sets (of 3DC). There should be 2 side-sets in between each corner-set.

INNER RING

1.  Create your magic ring

[chain 4  +  slip stitch into your starting hole] This forms a small circle.

2.  [chain 2]**  This if your first DC.

3.  In the center of your magic ring complete [7DC].

4.  [slip stitch to the left of **] If you are switching colors, you need to tie off here.

POPQUIZ: You should have a circle with 8 rungs.

 RING LEVEL I (begin new color)

1.  If you are starting a new color of yarn, start yarn in between any rung of DC.

2.  [chain 2  +  2DC ]**  This is your first set of 3DC.

3.  [chain 1]

4.  In between each DC of your inner ring complete

[3DC  +  chain 1]

5.  [slip stitch to the left of **] If you are switching colors you need to tie off.

POPQUIZ: You should have a circle with 8 rungs of [3DC] and a [chain 1] in between each rung.

 OUTER RING (being new color)

1.  If you are starting a new color of yarn, start yarn in the hole created by a [chain 1] between any set of [3DC].

2.  [chain 2  +  2DC]**  This is your first side-set of 3DC.

3.  In the next hole created by a [chain 1] of ring level I complete your first corner-set of [3DC  +  chain 2  +  3DC].

4.  In next hole, create your second side-set of [3DC].

5.  In each of the holes created by a [chain 1] of ring level I, alternate between corner-sets and side-sets.

6.  Back at the beginning [slip stitch to the left of **] and tie off.

POPQUIZ : You should have a square with an alternation between 4 side-sets (of 3DC) and 4 corner-sets (of 3DC  +  chain 2  +  3DC).
